Designer’s Diary ~ Shangri – La – Stitches

Designer’s Diary ~ Shangri – La – Stitches
The story of one girl’s dream of starting her own design business.

This is a new year and this is the year I am finally going to start my own design business. I am a designer. I design Cross Stitch, Embroidery and Sewing Patterns for Accessories, Home Décor, and Decoration. I combine different Embroidery, Embellishment and Sewing Techniques together to create my whimsical and heartfelt designs. Most of them contain bits of my original poetry or sayings about living, loving, and laughing.

There is nothing else that I have ever wanted to do more with my life, than to make things. It’s what I do, and who I am. I sew, stitch, embellish, paint, assemble and create things. Things to wear, things to decorate with, and things to use. I make things by hand designed by my heart. I have always loved to make and create things, and I am not happy unless that is what I am doing. I like to figure out how things can fit together to create something new.

This is my attempt to commit to making regular blog posts to document my progress in starting my own business. It’s very hard to keep believing in yourself and your abilities so this blog will be my “Designer’s Diary” for my business, Shangri – La – Stitches. When I am stitching I feel like I am in my “Happy Place” my paradise on earth, my Shangri La. I have finally made the decision to try and achieve what I have always wanted to do. Like anything worth having it has just taken me awhile to go for it. So here it goes!

Confessions of a True Fabricholic

I love fabric. I love the feel of it, the colors, the texture, and the patterns. I love the way you can take something flat and make something three- dimensional. It's totally amazing.

I've found that most sewers/designers are tactile people, and also very emotional and prone to squealing with delight when we see a fabric in the perfect color we are looking for. And if the fates are with us, also on sale. It's truly amazing that roller coaster feel of exhilaration you get when you find the fabric you're looking for. Most often than not, it's not the fabric you came in looking for, it's the fabric you had wanted for another project, weeks or months ago and couldn't find. It's usually the way.

We are vey much hunters and gatherers. Sometimes bordering on the obsessive hoarding range. I've never known a true fabricholic to just buy exactly what they need, especially if they have been sewing for any length of time.

Here are my rules to sew by:

Always buy extra fabric

Rule #1 You might really like it and want more

Rule #2 In case you make a mistake and need to recut

Rule #3 See Rule #1

Rule #4 It's on sale! (Trumps rule 1-3)

Happy Hunting!!!

I Stitch Therefore I Am

Stitchers are a curious bunch. I think it's something about the needle and thread that makes us think differently from the rest of the world. It's the same kind of creativeness that all artistic people share. The need to create, and make something beautiful, gives us joy.

When I am stitching, whether it is needlework, sewing, or anything else stitch related, I slip into that magical happy place, where the phone doesn't ring, bills don't exist, and I feel bliss. Athletes and artists call it being in the "Zone", or in the "Flow" of your work, when the rest of the world doesn't exist. It's only you, and your work. When you get into the flow you can feel it, because you know you are doing what makes your heart sing, and that's the best feeling in the world.

I have been stitching for over 20 years and it still holds the same joy for me now, as it always did. I love all the fiberarts, and I am a confirmed fabricholic, but I enjoy needlework the most and I am now starting to design my own freelance cross stitch designs. My goal is to create beautiful and meaningful designs for stitchers to express the art of their heart. I will be posting free designs and lessons on color and design, so I hope that you join me in making the world a more beautiful place, one stitch at a time.

Keep Stitching,

Cecile McCarrick
